Just glancing quickly through International Plumbing Code IPC , I noticed for threaded joints of various materials it says " Pipe-joint compound or tape shall be applied on the male threads only ". Just sayin' — Tester I've also used both with success.

I was just curious if there was a "right" way to do it Dupont would prefer you not call it Teflon tape. Joke is that we used the manufacturer's description on the seals and I highly doubt they called Parker-Hannafin to tell them to revise all their manuals. I love that we have a discussion of why not to call it Teflon, but not one explaining why it's called "dope" instead of the name on the package - "compound".

But maybe such research, if it exists, is not widely available or is proprietary. You'd figure any company selling these products has to know very clearly what they can claim about it in marketing, packaging, etc. I'd use t-tape first and a small amount of pipe dope on the tape. Did you use tape and dope together in all of those situations? Your answer doesn't say why other than that's what you've done. That's not a case. It's anecdote. Why do you recommend using both types of dope at the same time?

Is there an advantage to using both together? Pirate Pirate 21 1 1 bronze badge. So does the tape. It's a primary selling point of Teflon. The whole idea of using both furrows my brow, since the dope would be sealing to the tape, which makes no sense.

Use tape first, then apply the pipe dope on top. I've NEVER seen this done, and can't imagine any need to ever do this: both products have the same ultimate purpose. I typically use dope on steel and brass fittings that I'd use a a big wrench on, and tape on plastic pipes.

I see no benefit whatsoever to using both, and in fact, I'd say it's more likely to cause problems than doing it properly with one or the other. Supply Lines. Outlet Boxes. Hose Clamps Flow Meters. Pipe Thread Sealant vs. Pipe Thread Sealant Pipe thread sealant tape , also called Teflon tape, is a popular type of pipe sealant that comes in a roll like masking tape of electrical tape.

Advantages of Teflon tape: There are a number of reasons that Teflon tape is a popular choice of pipe sealant. It can be used quickly and easily and without making a mess. It provides adequate lubrication to allow pipe fittings to be easily assembled without damaging threads. This type of sealant is easy to find, carry, and store. Because of their chemical composition, compatibility of anaerobic resin compounds with plastic pipe and fittings should be verified before use.

Although these compounds cure sufficiently for many immediate uses, a hr period should be observed before activating high-pressure systems or allowing significant shock or vibration. Anaerobic resins can be difficult to remove from clothing or gloves. This class of sealants provides the strongest, longest-lasting seal presently available. They are recommended for temperatures up to F, pressures up to 10, psi, and where vibration will be encountered. These sealants are the choice when installers must make minor adjustments to a piping system.

Pipe sealant selection factors. Pumps Guidelines For Choosing A Pipe Thread Sealant Looking into any maintenance technician's tool box or a plant's supply closet likely turns up some type of pipe thread sealant. By Steven J. Vaccaro March 1, Types of sealants There are three basic types of pipe sealants in use today: teflon tape, pipe dope, and anaerobic resin compounds. Teflon tape The purpose of this white, nonsticking tape is to serve as a lubricant when threaded parts of a piping system are being assembled.

Pipe dope Pipe dope has been used in industrial applications for decades. Anaerobic resin compounds Anaerobic resin compounds use a different cure chemistry than solvent-based pipe dopes and do not contain solvents. Key concepts The application determines the sealant. Tape does not truly seal; it lubricates. Dope can harden and become brittle. Pipe joint compound is available in a tube or a canister with a brush applicator. The manufacturer's specifications are an important consideration when purchasing a sealant for your particular project.

It is important to note if the product is intended for use on only one certain type of pipe , or if it is a universal product that can be used on both metal and plastic. When buying pipe joint compound, look for a product that can be used on all types of plastic and metal threaded pipe, and keep it on hand as part of your collection of basic plumbing tools and materials. Some types of sealants are not appropriate for both water and gas.

Plumber's tape, for example, comes in two types—one for use specifically on gas and one for water pipes. This can also be true for a pipe joint compound, so read the product usage specifications carefully, and if you are not comfortable sealing gas pipes, contact a professional immediately. Metal threads can be fragile, so gently use a wire brush or compressed air to clean out the gunk. For PVC threads, try scraping gunk out with a small flat-head screwdriver and some rubbing alcohol on a rag to cut through any residue.

Dry thoroughly. To use pipe joint compound, apply an even coating onto the end threads of the male pipe the end that will go into the other pipe , using either the applicator brush or a finger. Do not smear the compound inside the pipes.
