WKWI WAZP WYCS Prior to the arrival of the colonists from Jamestown and Captain John Smith, little is known of its previous history. Indians inhabited the Island around 10, BC and left evidence behind with numerous artifacts including arrowheads, tools, pottery, beads, and many other items. Many of these items are on display in our Indian Artifact Exhibit here at the Museum. After inciting tribe after tribe to revolt, he finally surrendered to the Romans.
Because of his nobility and the renown of his heroism, he gained the admiration and respect of Claudius and was allowed to remain in practical freedom in Rome. Around ca , Hugh Gwynn was exploring the Chesapeake Bay and stopped at a small island at the mouth of the Piankatank River. Legend has it that he heard cries for help from an Indian girl who had fallen from her canoe. Seeing her in the water, he dived in and pulled her to safety. Not about to let the child drown, Gwynn rushed to her aid, diving into the Piankatank River and pulling her up from the waters. Once safely ashore, the young girl introduced herself. Her name was Pocahontas, daughter of Chief Powhatan. In gratitude for saving her life, Gwynn was gifted the island by Pocahontas.
In , Gwynn then claimed the island in the name of the King through the process of headrights. Whether Gwynn lived on the island, or merely settled his servants and colonists there, remains uncertain. However, he continued to expand his holdings throughout the remainder of his life while also serving in public office. Gwynn represented Charles River County in the House of Burgesses in , served as a justice in York County in , represented York County as a burgess in , and served as a burgess for Gloucester County in , the latter of which indicates he was resident on or near his island by Earlier that month, Dunmore had been anchored near Norfolk.
An unpopular man, Dunmore was known for creating and meting out his own brand of law against colonists.
Learning that American forces were preparing to attack his smallpox-weakened troops, Dunmore raided a colonial armory in Williamsburg, gathered up his Tory sympathizers and led them to the safety of a ship fleet harbored near Norfolk.
